Are Your Lawn Products Safe?

|

Man Spraying Chemical on Grass

Spring is here – and with it a desire for most to both work and play in our yards and gardens.

If you are like many homeowners, you probably routinely use a variety of lawn and garden treatments to keep your grass green and weed-free.

And that’s where dangers may lie.

Many homeowners have come to rely on lawn and garden products that contain glyphosate, a weed killer first invented by Monsanto in 1974, and a primary ingredient in the heavily promoted and popular product Roundup.

Glyphosate is now in hundreds of products sold worldwide.

Here’s the rub…  in 2015, the World Health Organization classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans.”

Subsequent studies, some as recent as 2019, have raised further serious health concerns.

What kind of harm can glyphosate cause?

Research now points to the possibility that this ubiquitous herbicide can cause a host of illnesses including:

  • Birth defects
  • Kidney disease
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Celiac disease
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Liver disease
  • Multiple cancers

Is it possible Monsanto knew of the dangers and promoted the chemical anyway?

Court documents seem to indicate they did.

As reported in the German newspaper Spiegel: “The Monsanto Papers tell an alarming story of ghostwriting, scientific manipulation and the withholding of information,” says Michael Baum, a partner in the law firm of Baum, Hedlund, Aristei & Goldman, which is bringing one of the US class actions against Monsanto. According to Baum, Monsanto used the same strategies as the tobacco industry: “creating doubt, attacking people, doing ghostwriting.”

What can the average homeowner do to protect their family?

  • First – do your homework, investigating the ingredients of all the products you’re using around the house.
  • If you have doubts about the safety of any product – don’t use it until those doubts are removed.
  • When it comes to weed and insect control – look into your organic options. There is a wide range of effective products available.
