Avoid a Car Accident This Winter With These Safe Driving Tips

Each change of seasons brings its own driving challenges… the winter seasonCar accident lawyer shares tips for safe winter drivingmost of all.  As we head into another snowy, icy, wet and cold time of year – remember these things to help you avoid a car accident on Connecticut roads.

Winter Safe Driving Tips:

1. Make sure you car is ready for the tough conditions ahead. Check the brakes, battery, belts, filters, lights, tires, windshield wipers and fluid and anti-freeze .

2. Make sure you have jumper cables on board.   Cold days and nights are tough on batteries.  Be safe and be prepared.

3. Clear that windshield, rear and side windows as well as your lights before you move one inch.  You can’t avoid danger if you can’t see it.  Prevent a car accident by keeping your field of vision clear.

4. Carry the tools you will need in a bad storm.  Ice scrapers, de-icing material, perhaps a collapsible shovel…

5. Make sure your emergency flashers are working and make sure you carry a flashlight in the glove compartment.

6. Take it slow.  One of the biggest keys to avoiding a car accident on Connecticut roads.  If there is snow on the road – think of cutting your normal speed in half – or more.  If it is wet – reducing your speed is also important.  On ice – don’t travel unless you have to travel.  No speed is safe.  While driving over bridges and through shady spots, be especially alert for ice. These areas freeze earlier and stay frozen longer than the rest of the road.  Break carefully.  Slow down long before you need to stop.

7.  If possible, when winter arrives – very carefully practice your winter driving skills in a deserted and wide open parking lot.

8.  Always turn your headlights on so you can be seen.   Again – many car accidents can be avoided if you are clearly visible.

10.  Keep your distance.   It can often take two to three times the normal breaking distance to stop on snowy roads.  Wet roads can also be slick.  Always leave room for safety.

12.  If you find yourself sliding or skidding, don’t panic.  Tap your breaks lightly and turn the wheel in the direction you want to travel.

13.  If you’re stranded during a snowstorm, stay in your car.   But be careful about running your car for long periods in deep snow.  Carbon monoxide (CO) can build up if the exhaust system has leaks, the tailpipe is clogged, or the vehicle is boxed in by snow drifts. CO is odorless, invisible, and deadly.

14. Ok. Here’s the best tip of all….  Stay home.  Do your best to wait for the weather and roads to clear before you travel. You’re unlikely to get into a car accident if you’re nowhere near a car.

15. Most important – always drive sober … or don’t drive at all.
