Avoid Car Accidents – Choose Not To Text & Drive

We have written a great deal about the rising risk to driver safety fromAvoid car accidents - choose not to text and drive new technologies that distract the driver.  One of the leading distracters and biggest contributors to car accidents in Connecticut is cell phones.  When people use their cell phones to call or text while driving they significantly increasing the likelihood of a car accident.

So what can be done about this problem?  First – when it comes to your children – lead by example.  Then firmly counsel them about the grave risks of texting or calling while driving.   Explain the legal implications if they are caught by law enforcement and be brutally frank with them about the safety risks.  Tell them cell phone use is a leading cause of fatal car accidents in Connecticut.  Tell them that if and when they use their cell phones while driving, they are risking their lives and the lives of others.

Now one would think that with all this technology, there would be a technological solution to prevent cell phone use by drivers.  In fact – there are emerging tools.

There are now phone applications that can detect when a cell phone is moving at the speeds of a car.  These applications restrict phone use but have a major drawback.  They can’t distinguish drivers from passengers and can easily be overriden by the user.  A spokesperson for the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety has rated these applications generally reliable despite the shortcomings.

There are also more expensive applications (ZoomSafer and CellControl) that listen for a wireless signal from the car or from a device installed in the car.  These apps put the driver’s phone in driver mode – shutting it down when activated.

Frustratingly – these new applications do not work for iPhones, the most popular cell phones in the United States, because iPhones do not let apps run in the background.  These new applications only work for Androids and Blackberrys.

The U.S. Department of Transportation is also getting involved – offering grants to municipalities to step up law enforcement and publicity campaigns.  One such project is currently underway in the Hartford area.

So even with technology offering some solutions to the problem of cell phones are auto safety – the best option is still a human one – choosing not to use cell phones while driving.
