David Cooney, a partner at RisCassi & Davis, P.C., was elected President of the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association at its annual meeting on June 7, 2010, at the Water’s Edge Resort in Westbrook. David will be the fifth lawyer at RisCassi & Davis to serve in this capacity. The Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association is a non-profit professional association dedicated to creating and maintaining a more just society by preserving individual rights within the justice system. Over 1,300 of Connecticut’s most accomplished and active lawyers are members. CTLA provides members with continuing education, publications, trial skills workshops, and networking opportunities that keep them current on the law.
As president of the association, David will serve as chair of the CTLA’s Board of Governors and Executive Committee. In addition to directing the affairs of the association, David will also be involved in CTLA’s lobbying efforts at the State legislature and will be working with the State Judiciary on issues of concern to CTLA’s membership. He will also be interacting with Presidents of other state trial lawyer associations and the American Association of Justice, the organization which represents plaintiff’s attorneys throughout the United States.
Bill Davis, Jim Bartolini, Andrew Groher and Gene Swain have all previously served as CTLA presidents. The firm’s founder, Leon RisCassi, was one of several lawyers instrumental in founding the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association in 1956.
