Help Your Teenagers Avoid Car Accidents This Summer

Summer is a great time of the year in Connecticut.  Warm temperatures, keep your kids safe from car accidents this summer long days, great shorelines and lakes to enjoy – and vacation.

As great a season as it is – summertime is sadly the time of year when teenage drivers in Connecticut are most at risk for a car accident.  Fatal car accidents are also more prevalent in the summer.

What makes the summer more dangerous and car accidents more prevalent?

  • Summertime means more freedom and more time to play and hang-out with friends.  Fewer scheduled obligations often means more time spent driving.
  • Each generation of teenagers believes they are immortal.  This age group probably worries less about safety issues than most.
  • Free time with friends often means scheduled and impromptu parties.  Parties all too often include alcohol, drugs or both.  As a result more intoxicated young drivers are on the roads.
  • Young drivers can have a tendency to drive at speeds exceeding legal limits.
  • A new survey, just released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,  points to a new and deadly hazard — especially among young drivers. In the survey, about 58 percent of high school seniors said they had texted or emailed while driving during the previous month. About 43 percent of high school juniors acknowledged they did the same thing.
  • When teenagers carry teenage passengers – something that is an unavoidable temptation even when illegal – the likelihood of an accident rises dramatically.

So – the dangerous mix of free time, access to drugs and alcohol, the inclination to use cell phones while driving, driving at excessive speeds and more are at the core of th

e summertime problem for young drivers and their families.

What can a parent do?  The years when teenagers are driving ages each and every parent.  It’s a scary time.  Here are a few things to consider:

  • Lead by example from the earliest point in a child’s life.  Don’t use your cell phone when driving, don’t drink and drive – in short – behave responsibly.
  • Talk to your children before they become drivers.  Make them aware of the ways to stay safe when driving a car – or riding as a passenger.
  • Supervise your young drivers – make sure they understand the laws of the road – as well as your family rules.
  • Try to set up a system whereby if your child is at a party and drinks – or is with a driver who is intoxicated and unsafe – they can call you for a ride home.
