So You Think Your Teenage Driver Is Distracted Now? Just Wait…

teens_distracted_drivingEvery parent of a teenage driver worries for their child’s safety when that child leaves for a drive to run an errand or visit a friend. Accidents happen.

We’ve written a lot in the past about the major causes of teenage car accidents. They include:

  • Distracted driving (texting, talking on a cell phone, visiting with other passengers, eating, fooling with music settings, adjusting the air, putting on makeup and more)
  • Driving while intoxicated
  • Driving in bad weather (fog, rain, snow, ice, etc.)
  • Over-confidence

Imagine if there was a device that displayed an image of a caller or a text message or an email directly into your child’s field of vision while they were driving?

Believe it or not, several companies are developing that very technology for widespread use in cars and trucks. The devices work by using a projection device that wirelessly transfers information from a smartphone and uses sophisticated optics to allow data — maps, social media, speed, incoming texts, and caller identification— to literally hover above the dashboard. Yup – directly in line of site of the driver.

Sound like a bad idea? We think it will have catastrophic consequences. Others agree…  “It’s a horrible idea,” said Paul Atchley, a psychologist at the University of Kansas who studies driver distraction. “Attending to the road is much more complicated than having your head turned in its direction”, he said. “The technology is driven by a false assumption that seeing requires nothing more than having the eyes fixed on the right spot.”

And transportation safety officials are worried too, fearing that “tech and innovation in the auto industry are moving so much faster than the regulators can keep up with it.”

Will government officials or consumers safety groups seek controls over these new devices? Only time will tell.
