What Your Personal Injury Lawyer Needs To Know…

WHAT DOES MY PERSONAL INJURY LAWYER NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MY MEDICAL TREATMENT?

All of the facts regarding your injuries should be reported to your doctor immediately.  In order to receive the best medical care, you should be as detailed and descriptive as possible when telling the doctor about your symptoms.  As a general rule, it is important to follow your doctor’s advice regarding treatments and visits.  Of course, if you have some reason to question the medical advice from your particular doctor and desire a second opinion, you should not hesitate to do so.  We want our clients to make the best possible medical recovery from their injuries.

Please keep a record of all expenses that you incur in conjunction with your case, even if they are being submitted for payment by a health or medical insurance company.  You should forward to your attorney’s office all bills and receipts for medical or hospital care, medicines, medical supplies (as well as any records related to property damage in appropriate cases, such as motor vehicle accidents).  It is important that you also keep a copy of the bills for your records.  You may need them for submission to your health insurance carrier.  If you have medical insurance, be sure to discuss it with your medical providers, so that they, and you, can take the proper steps to maximize the chance that the insurance company will pay for your treatment.  We are equipped to help you in this process.  Please call us if we can be of assistance.

If you have been unable to work, and your doctor releases you to return to work, please let your attorney know.  You and your attorney will need to document the amount of time you lose from work and the amount of any resulting wage loss.  Similarly, if your doctor releases you from further treatment, let your attorney know that as well.

If you have visible injuries, such as bruises, cuts, scrapes, casts, braces, or scars, it can be very helpful to obtain photographs documenting those injuries, both initially, and later.  Similarly, if your injuries require the use of any medical devices, such as casts, braces, wheelchairs and the like, photographs documenting their use will also be helpful.  If you have a knowledgeable family photographer and good equipment, take some pictures, date them, and send them to us.  If you cannot get a good photograph yourself, let your attorney know so that he or she can make arrangements to obtain photographic documentation of your injuries.
